From birth, we are blessed with the gift of expression. Prior to even being able to speak words, we can communicate with others through facial expressions, sounds and the movement of our bodies. Expression is a skill that although is innate, it is something we develop further as we venture through life. As we grow older, we tailor our expression to convey our own thoughts, feelings, perceptions, desires, beliefs, identity, etc. Our self-expression becomes not only a part of who we are, but who we want the world to see, experience and honor.
Expression is incredibly unique; we all have a different way that we express ourselves. Artists express their imagination, thoughts, feelings, perceptions, style, vision, and desires in diverse forms. Whether it’s visual or performing arts or via literature, artists create beautiful and powerful works that speak into the eyes, heart, mind, body, and soul of their audiences.
Emotions that are felt within can be shared with others through expression. Whether the emotions are positive or negative, expression allows for the release of them. Love is this intense emotion that none of us can see, but through expression, enables us to speak, show, serve and feel another’s love as well as quantify our own. We can understand someone’s pain through their tears, visible sadness, the grief spoken through their words and the acts of mourning carried out as they bid farewell to lost loved ones.
Expression gives life to the things we cannot see, but that we think and feel from within that would remain intangible otherwise. It grants us the opportunity to give a voice to the things that would remain silent.
Expression allows for people to authentically communicate what’s inside of them to be able to be seen, heard, and understood by others and the world. Expression empowers us all to live their truth.
